Royal fortresses of Languedoc &
Cathar Country Sites

Perched atop the ridges of the Corbières and the Montagne Noire, the royal fortresses of Languedoc tell a unique story: that of the consolidation of royal power following the Albigensian Crusade. From Carcassonne to Montségur, including Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, and Termes, these spectacular sites captivate with their defensive architecture and the stunning landscapes they overlook. An exceptional heritage candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

The royal fortresses of Languedoc nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status

Born of royal power in the 13th century, the eight fortresses of Languedoc – Carcassonne, Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Aguilar, Termes, Puilaurens, Lastours, and Montségur – embody a unique model of military architecture. Sentinels of the Kingdom of France, they tell a foundational chapter of our history. Today, they are united in a collective effort for a UNESCO World Heritage nomination, driven by the local territories.

In addition to the Royal Fortresses of Languedoc, the “Cathar Country Sites” are powerful symbols—witnesses, places of memory and life, fascinating remnants with intertwined destinies, marked by values of resistance, tolerance, conquest, or rebellion. Together, these sites shape an authentic landscape that gives Aude its distinctive character…

Fortresses and castles

Some refer to them (incorrectly) as “Cathar Castles,” others prefer the name “Citadels of Vertigo” (Michel Roquebert). Like sentinels perched between sky and earth, the fortresses and castles continue to defy time and the horizon…

Abbeys and medieval towns

Nestled in the verdant valleys of the Aude, medieval abbeys complete this rolling landscape of dips and crests.

Paths wander and fade into vast, endless spaces such as those around the Fontfroide massif. Others, like those in Lagrasse, lead to the heart of these charming medieval towns where, around a corner, you might discover a washhouse, a bell tower, or a once‑bustling market hall…
