Description
In April–May 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed two quintets that are often contrasted: K. 515 in C major, serene and luminous, and K. 516 in G minor, imbued with darkness, sorrow and anguish.
Some interpret these works as a meditation on death, which Mozart described as “soothing and comforting”. Yet, after a brief lament, the final movement of K. 516 bursts into a joyful surge of vitality.
String Quintet No. 2, Op. 87, written shortly before his death and revised by Felix Mendelssohn, opens with a sombre Adagio reminiscent of a funeral march, within a work otherwise described as “virtuosic, supple and elegant”.
This ensemble of two violins, two violas and one cello has inspired numerous masterpieces, two of which will be performed this evening by soloists from the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.
