Description

The last work completed by Pergolesi in 1736, the *Stabat Mater* holds a unique place between sacred music and operatic theatre. Trained in the Neapolitan opera tradition, the composer alternates solo arias and duets in a succession of contrasting moods, where the variety of keys and tempi gives the text an intensely dramatic expression.

Some movements draw directly on the language of opera, while others favour a more restrained, contemplative approach. This close relationship between the stage and religious music, common in eighteenth-century Italy, lends the work exceptional expressive power.
